Mark Abdelmalek, MD

Dr. Mark Abdelmalek is a highly regarded board-certified dermatologist, skin cancer surgeon, and ABC News reporter. Dr. Mark spent more than a decade in academic medicine culminating as the Interim Chair of the Department of Dermatology at Drexel University. While at the forefront of academic medicine in Philadelphia, he partnered with premier faculty to train a generation of dermatologists. Dr. Mark has focused much of his academic medical career on teaching, clinical research, and providing comprehensive skin care for organ transplant patients. As a fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon, Dr. Mark specializes in the precise surgical removal of skin cancer with expert reconstruction. Dr. Mark was honored by his peers in
2016 with the prestigious Philadelphia Dermatological Society ‘Founders Award’ for “devoting extraordinary time and talent as a teacher and clinician.” He is recognized by Castle Connolly and Philadelphia magazine as one of Philadelphia’s “Top Doctors” and “Rising Stars in Medicine.”

Dr. Abdelmalek is a graduate of Penn State University’s Schreyer Honors College. He received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Drexel University College of Medicine. He completed his dermatology residency at Drexel University where he also served as Chief Dermatology Resident.  After residency, he received additional skin cancer surgical and laser training in an American College of Mohs Micrographic Surgery Fellowship.

Dr. Mark is also an award-winning ABC News medical & investigative reporter. He has extensively reported on health care including a White House special on health care reform with former President Obama. As part of the ABC News “Hidden America” team, Dr. Mark highlights issues that vulnerable populations face like the struggle for millions of Americans to earn a living wage, the overmedication of foster children with antipsychotics, sexual harassment of low-wage workers, and the plight of patients facing the so-called practice of “patient dumping.”  Dr. Mark has also covered a variety of breaking news stories including the 2018 Thailand cave rescue, the 2018 Pittsburgh synagogue shooting, the worldwide 2014 Ebola crisis, the Boston Marathon bombings and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. Over the last decade, he has worked alongside ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer sharing important stories with television audiences for Good Morning America, ABC World News, 20/20, and Nightline. In 2016, Dr. Mark received an Alfred I. duPont Columbia Award, one of the most prestigious honors in
journalism, widely regarded as the equivalent of the Pulitzer Prizes for broadcast news. Dr. Mark was also nominated for a Peabody Award and an Emmy® award in 2018.

Our staff includes RNs with combined experience of over twenty years in dermatology and Mohs surgery. In addition, our Mohs histotech is HT, ASCP certified and has over 10 years preparing Mohs frozen sections.
