Patients often come in seeking treatment for eczema in Philadelphia. Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a skin condition that produces inflamed and itchy patches of dry skin. It is not a contagious condition.

Eczema Symptoms

The symptoms of eczema are:

  • Dry skin
  • Itchy and flaky skin
  • Irritated and inflamed skin

Itching episodes flare up and diminish but can return again.

Eczema can appear anywhere on the body. It typically affects the scalp and cheeks, inner elbows, behind the knees, and arms. It occurs often on the faces of young children. However, it varies in presentation across children, teenagers, and adults. Its incidence becomes less intense with age.

Types of Eczema

There are different types of eczema:

Contact Dermatitis – Skin irritation caused by an irritant. The inflammation subsides once the irritant is eliminated.

Dyshidrotic Dermatitis – This form of eczema occurs on the soles of the feet, fingers, and palms. It is marked by scaly skin patches that become itchy, cracked, painful, and red. This occurs more often in women.

Nummular Dermatitis – This condition occurs frequently in men. It shows up as round patches of dry skin, typically on the legs.

What Are the Treatment Options for Eczema?

A number of treatment options are available to address all types of eczema. Our dermatologists will recommend treatments based on the severity of eczema you are experiencing.

Oral Medications – Over-the-counter antihistamines are often recommended to relieve the itching. This class of medications blocks the body’s histamine response, which is responsible for causing allergic reactions. Examples of antihistamines include:

  • Loratadine
  • Cetirizine
  • Fexofenadine

Topical Treatments – Steroid-based skin ointments and creams like cortisone can help provide relief from the scaling and itching. Low-potency steroids like hydrocortisone are readily available as over-the-counter solutions. If you are not responding well to these medications, your dermatologist may prescribe higher-potency steroids.

Light Therapy – Also called phototherapy, this treatment uses sun lamps or ultraviolet lamps to stop your immune system from producing reactions that elicit eczema. Multiple light therapy sessions are required. This treatment can clear up and/or reduce your eczema.

How Are Treatments Administered?

Over-the-counter medications can be easily obtained from any drug store. However, it is recommended that you consult with our dermatologists before taking these medications.

Higher-potency antihistamines require a prescription.

Light therapy treatments using sun lamps or ultraviolet lamps can be conducted in an office environment or at home.

Managing Eczema Symptoms

Currently, there is no cure for this skin condition. However, medications, light therapy, stress reduction, and getting quality sleep can effectively manage your condition.

To manage your eczema, you need to make lifestyle changes that reduce your stress and improve your sleep quality. Avoid things that can irritate your skin, such as harsh detergents, strong-smelling soaps, and rough fabrics. Cold temperatures can also contribute to dry skin and itchy flare-ups.

If you have eczema, avoid scratching the affected area. In order to prevent breaks in the skin, rub the area instead of scratching it. Since dry skin can trigger flare-ups, you need to use a cream or ointment-based moisturizer to soothe the area.

In addition, antihistamines may cause drowsiness, so avoid activities that require you to be alert. When used for long periods of time, antihistamines can cause the following symptoms:

  • Irritation
  • Discoloration of the skin
  • Skin thinning

Eczema Treatment Cost

The cost of your eczema treatment will depend on several factors. Factors that impact price include the exact treatment modality chosen and your specific type of eczema.
