What Is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that can affect various areas of the face, including the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin regions. It typically occurs in episodes, with flare-ups lasting for weeks or months.
This skin condition typically manifests in the form of facial redness. It causes small blood vessels to become swollen, making them more visible on the surface of the skin. It is also accompanied by the formation of swollen red bumps that look similar to acne.
Who Is Typically Affected?
Rosacea is quite common. This condition can affect people of all skin types and can occur at any age. It primarily affects people who are around age 30 and occurs most often in women and individuals with light skin.
Symptoms of This Condition
- The most common symptoms of rosacea include:
- Redness
- Visible blood vessels
- Small pus-filled bumps
- Eye irritation
- Dryness
- An increase in skin thickness
- A stinging or burning sensation
The Different Types of Rosacea
There are several categories of rosacea, each of which presents with its own specific symptoms. These are the four general categories of rosacea:
Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea – Redness, visible blood vessels, facial flushing, and a burning and stinging sensation
Papulopustular Rosacea – Redness, swelling, small red bumps or pimples, and a tender or hot sensation
Phymatous Rosacea – Thickening of the skin, along with a bumpy texture
Ocular Rosacea – Eye irritation, redness of the eyes, swelling of the eyelids, and a dry and itchy sensation
What Causes Rosacea?
The exact cause of rosacea is currently unknown. However, research has identified a number of factors that are known to trigger flare-ups. These include:
- Exposure to sunlight
- High temperatures
- Stress
- Alcohol consumption
- Spicy foods
- Exercise and other strenuous activities
Treatments for Rosacea
While there is no cure for rosacea, there are treatments that can help to manage chronic rosacea and prevent frequent flare-ups from occurring. The first step is visiting a dermatologist and having your condition properly diagnosed.
Avoiding known rosacea triggers is key for the prevention of flare-ups. It is important to only use gentle skin care products to cleanse your face. Products that contain menthol, exfoliants, alcohol, or oils should be avoided, since they may cause flare-ups to occur.
Medical treatments for the symptoms of rosacea can include a variety of therapies, such as topical creams, lotions, and oral medications. The ideal treatment method for your symptoms will be discussed during a consultation.

I can’t imagine a better relationship with a Healthcare Provider
I have been a patient of Dr. Clifford Perlis for a number of years, and I can’t imagine a better relationship with a Healthcare Provider.
Dr. Perlis is the epitome of a caregiver, and I value the exchange of information, attentiveness, dependability and a mutual respect, that is ever-present.
I have a comfort level knowing I can’t change some of the healthcare issues I am dealt, but I can embrace who supports me on my “path!”
Thank you for letting me “share!”
